Yamhill County, the birthplace of Oregon’s world-class wines, contains
two-thirds of the state’s vineyard acreage and is home to more than
200 wineries. The region is known for producing the cool-climate
grape, Pinot noir, and boasts a rare mix of family-owned vineyards, historic
communities and culinary treasures.
Day 1
From Portland, drive approximately 20 miles southwest to Yamhill
County.
As you drive down 99W, start your culinary and wine tasting adventure
at Rex Hill Vineyards, just prior to entering the City of Newberg. Thirteen
of their recent releases have scored 90
points or above.
Before leaving Newberg pick up a picnic lunch at The
French Bear on College
Street to enjoy at
Archery Summit winery. Perched 700 feet above the Yamhill Valley,
Archery Summit offers spectacular views, state of the art winemaking facilities
and some of the best wine in the nation. The tasting room is open daily;
if you make advance reservations for a tour, you can witness their unique
winemaking process which functions entirely on gravity and houses their
barrels 50 feet below ground.
Featured in the bestseller “1000 Places to See Before you Die” and
voted “Best Inn in Oregon’s
Wine Country,” check in at the Wine Country
Farms Bed & Breakfast in Dayton.
Head back to College Street in Newberg for the hottest new culinary spot
in Oregon's wine
Country: The Painted Lady Restaurant. The
Painted Lady blends old
school culinary technique
with innovative color and a contemporary flair in a Victorian setting.
Day 2
Take a tour of the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville. The
museum features the
largest wooden airplane ever built, the Spruce Goose, seen in the
Oscar-winning movie, “The
Aviator.”
Drive to Cuneo Cellars in Carlton, seven miles north of McMinnville,
for a private
winery tour and tasting with winemaker Gino Cuneo.
Pick up a map of the Yamhill County wineries and explore Oregon’s
leading wine country on a
self-guided tasting tour.
Journey to Cuvee Restaurant in Carlton, where owner and chef Gilbert
Henry will prepare an
exquisite dinner featuring his famous French country cuisine, complemented
by an extensive local
wine list and sophisticated dining room.
Day 3
Enjoy a delicious Breakfast prepared by Wine Country
Farm Bed & Breakfast.
Expand your art collection with a visit to the Lawrence
Gallery. After
browsing through the
gallery and sculpture gardens, head upstairs and enjoy lunch at Fresh
Palate Café, located on the
second floor of the gallery. The café pairs fresh Northwest
cuisine with Yamhill Valley wines.
Return home.
